The Jewish shtetls existed for hundreds of years as a unique cultural world. This world completely vanished since World War II. The restored cemetery, the mass murder sites and the monuments are an attempt to reconstruct the special value the shtetl.
The museum is an important addition to the Jewish historical sites in the area. “Lost Shtetl” Museum will reveal the history of the shtetls in Lithuania, their myths and realities, politics, dynamics, and the changes brought about by World War I and the Holocaust with emphasis on Seduva shtetl where a vibrant Jewish community once lived.
The museum is homage to the architectural context of the area and the skyline of the shtetl’s street, in a contemporary style. From a distance the visitor will recognize the sky line and the shape of a typical Seduvian street sculptured in the landscape: familiar but different. The image of the shtetl is rediscovered in a new and contemporary way. The architecture is clean, devoid of architectural and construction elements.
The museum has two wings: The west wing contains the permanent exhibition halls immediately recognized upon arriving from Seduva town by the stained glass windows bedecking the wall of the synagogue. The east wing with administration functions and adjacent facilities.
